Food for thought: Meatloaf

If you guys followed my original blog, you will know that i shared recipes from time to time, and i thought hell, why not do that again? Because yes I love books, but, i also love to eat. I mean, come on, its food- am i right?
So, for the first recipe I wanted to share with y'all, i went with good ol' Meatloaf.
It is easy to make, customizable, and you can add any number of sides.

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
3 slices bread torn up in little pieces
1 Tablespoon Wortchestshire sauce
1/2 Tablespoon Onion Powder
1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
1/2 teaspoon dry ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (or more/less, to taste)
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup ketchup

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Combine all ingredients EXCEPT ketchup in a large bowl using hands. (If you don't want to use your hands- i myself use a fork to mix and mash it all together & it works well!)
  3. Spread mixture into a loaf pan, or shape into a loaf on a sheet pan (ungreased pan/s)
  4. Spread ketchup on top of meatloaf
  5. Cook for 1 your- 1 hour and 15 minutes (or until meat is 160°F)
  6. Let stand 5 minutes and serve.
Note: Loaf pan will help keep moist. Can use slices of bread on bottom of pan to catch excess grease.

How to make the recipe your own:

  • You can omit the hot sauce all together or add more or less to your liking.
  • Instead of or in addition to using onion powder and garlic powder, youcan use chopped onions, chopped peppers (green/yellow/orange), and minced garlic.
  • Can use seasoned bread crumbs instead of or in addition to torn up pieces of bread.
  • When spreading the meat in the pan, spread half out, then sprinkle cheese over it, then add the top half of the meat to have a cheese stuffed meatloaf.
  • Instead of ketchup, try using barbeque sauce.
For sides you can have potatoes (mashed, baked, etc) carrots, green beans, salad, garlic bread, stuffing, etc.

If you try this recipe, let me know how it turns out!
