Review: The Assassin's Blade

Title: The Assassin's Blade

Series: Throne of Glass

Author: Sarah J Maas

Release Date: March 2014

Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom’s most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful and ruthless Assassin’s Guild, Celaena yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer for hire, Sam.

When Celaena's scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, she finds herself acting independently of his wishes—and questioning her own allegiance. Along the way, she makes friends and enemies alike, and discovers that she feels far more for Sam than just friendship. But by defying Arobynn’s orders, Celaena risks unimaginable punishment, and with Sam by her side, he is in danger, too. They will have to risk it all if they hope to escape Arobynn’s clutches—and if they fail, they’ll lose not just a chance at freedom, but their lives . . .

A prequel to Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas offers readers a deeper look into the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling—and deadly—world.

So, I have been in a bit of a slump, and come the holidays and birthdays season my reading really slows down. But I finally decided to pick up The Assassin's Blade from the Throne of Glass series. I originally planned on reading both AB & ToG, before I had arcs to read, but it didn't work out that way, and probably won't get to ToG until end of January/early Feb.

The Assassin's Blade is a series of Novellas set before Throne of Glass takes place & follows a few of Celeana's adventures that make her who she is & who she will become.

Celeana may be just a young girl, but she is one of the most feared assassin's and protegee to the King of Assassins.

And as the Protegee, Arobynn, wants her all for himself. So when she concocts a plan that defies Arobynn's orders, she is punished and sent away for months. Now she is left questioning her alligence to Arobynn, her friendship with Sam, another assassin who wanted her top spot, and acquaintances she made along the way. But failing to escape Arobynn's clutches may cost more than just Celeana & Sam's freedom's but their lives...

So firstly, I did enjoy these short stories & Celeana's adventures and growth. I don't know why I have waited so long to read these books, but when I finally got the series in paperback on sale from Walmart, I knew I had to dive in.

Second, who hurt you SJM? 😭😂😂 - I loved Sam, he was one of my favorite characters throughout this book, but something kept me from falling *in* love with him. I had a feeling from the very beginning something may happen, - even though I had went into this book completely blind & surprisingly avoided most spoilers for this entire series - I just knew something was going to happen. I knew, but it was still a gut punch that I wasn't ready for. And probably something I'm not going to get over anytime soon.

So Assassin's Blade sets up the rest of the series for Celeana & a look into what made who who she is. & I am looking forward to diving into Throne of Glass (eventually) & more of this world & what becomes of Celeana.

4 ⭐ out of 5 ⭐.
